Question by 95081934578918250295972397023502: Does handheld GPS allow you to enter latitude and longitude?
Does a handheld GPS allow you to enter latitude and longitude? Or if not, does it show the latitude and longitude on the screen. I want to buy a Garmin etrex H to find the corners of my land. Thanks in advance community.
Answer by (:P)
I have a TomTom and it does allow you to enter latitude and longitude to locate a place. It also shows you the L&L of places where you are.

Question by fisherman: the etrex H GPS system?
what quality’s does the etrex h gps have??? can I mark a spot then wonder off from it then the gps can show me the way back??? and how would I use this thing… like maps and roads and such and putting my own made routes…is it any different form the bushnell backtrack… not that it has a map but like some of the same features….
just need an answer not any comments of other brands and gps systems…

It is a very basic gps. You can store up to 500 points and the arrow will point you to that point. It does not store maps, just way points that you enter.

Question by Dutch Dookie: Help with my Garmin eTrex H?
So I just got a “Garmin eTrex H” as my grad present and wanna try geocaching which I’ve done with my uncle before. Where do I find coordinates for some geocaches nearby and how do I enter them????
Answer by Fun Skater
www.geocaching.com/ is by far the site with the largest list of caches. They also have articles that will help you get started.
http://dir.groups.yahoo.com/dir/3750000022 will give you a listing of yahoo groups about geocaching. I am not a member of any of them but expect that there are probably a couple that might be helpful to a beginner.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/etrex_legend/ and http://groups.yahoo.com/group/etrex/ both have people who are willing to help beginners with their etrex GPSs.

Question by : Is the etrex H a good beginner’s gps for geocaching?
I am a beginner in geocaching and have done a few caches with friends and their gps’s but want to buy my own gps for geocaching. I saw the etrex H and realized it was fairly inexpensive (when considering gps units) but I want to make sure it is reliable. Especially with geocaching.

Question by : does the Garmin etrex ventureHC?
If I buy the City Navigator maps, will I be able to have my GPS route though the streets? The gps says that it doesn’t have “auto-routing”, but can I manually enable it?
Answer by Fun Skater
You can always draw a route manually.
Auto-routing means that you give it a start and end point, then it fills in all the turns between them.
Manually drawing the route means that it shows straight lines between any points that you give it. It is much easier to manually create a route on your computer (than doing it on the GPS) using the mapsource program that comes with the maps, then download the route to the GPS.

Question by unicycle guy: What is the best mapping software on a computer (free if possible)?
I recently bought an eTrex Legend HCx, mainly for geocaching. I have worked out how to download geocaches, but I would also like to put in routes on a computer, what is the best software for doing this, and is there one that is free for doing this?

Question by : how do you put more than 1 way point on the etrex h?
Answer by Fun Skater
You can do more for your present location or by pointing to the map the same as the first one.
If you are typing coordinates into the GPS, just go to the main menu, Mark waypoint and edit the information on the screen. Every waypoint needs a unique name but you can change the location also.
The easiest way is to use the mapsource software (comes with most of the etrex family) to mark the waypoints and type in the coordinates.
If you want to mark points on a map, using a purchased map from Garmin is the easiest via mapsource.
If you didn’t purchase maps from Garmin, you can mark locations (and tracks) on google maps via the MyMap feature or use other google map based systems like Gmap Pedometer (www.gmap-pedometer.com/). You can use the Java script on www.elsewhere.org/journal/gmaptogpx/ to create a GPX file that most GPS loader programs can use or a KML file that needs to be converted into the GPX.
GPS Visualizer (http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input) can convert the KML to GPX and a lot of other things.

Question by ublion: I need help with my “eTrex Vista C”?
Im a techno retard. I just want to ride my bike and have tell how many miles I’ve ridden then reset it. Ive read the directions and cant figure it out . It should be easy but I cant figure it out.
Answer by Fun Skater
The upper right button changes between screens.
The lower left opens the menu for the screen.
The click stick is the button on the face of the GPS. You can press it in 4 directions and as a button to select items.
Go to the trip screen, it will have an array of boxes with numbers.
One of those numbers should say trip odometer.
Press the menu button and select reset and you can choose which items to reset.
If the trip odometer is not listed or you want a different selection of data listed, press the menu button and select change data field. You then use the click stick to move the highlighted cell and press the click stick. You then get a list of what items you can put in the field.
If you want to see your distance along with the map, move to the map screen and press the menu button. This will give you the option to have data fields above the map. After you have chosen to have data fields, you can go back to the menu and change what is displayed in them.

Question by AskBrian: What is the best way to manage GPS data with a PC?
I have a Garmin eTrex GPS that did not come with any software, but has a USB port for PC interface. What is the best way to manage my waypoints, tracks, etc? Garmin has Topo map software that can be purchased separately but it is expensive. You’re really paying for the detailed maps, and I don’t need them. I just want to manage my own waypoints on a basic map.
Answer by gary t
For just waypoint management, there are dozens of programs.
I’d suggest having a look at http://gpsinformation.net/ for a list of some options. I’ve heard a few people recommend EasyGPS, but I haven’t tried it for years (it wasn’t great back then though)
